Jana, a final-year student at Sacré-Coeur Lindthout presents the vital role of women and girls in the climate fight
When tackling the topic of Women and Girls roles, usually discussion lands, quite understandably, on vulnerability. Data shows that women and girls often bear heavier impacts of climate change due to existing inequalities: higher risks in disasters, more displacements, and other devastating consequences of droughts or floods leading to early marriage or prostitution just to survive. But Jana takes the topic further. Focussing only on vulnerabilities is just half the picture. Advancing gender equality is not just good in itself for social justice, but it is a powerful and indispensable strategy to tackle climate change. This podcast will explain how empowering women and girls actually translates into climate solutions.
Jana highlights the women's keyrole in food production for the planet (80%) and takes the concrete example of women from the chars area, riverine islands in northern Bangladesh. Statistics show that if women had the same access to land, credits, training, tools, etc.. than men, it would increase their yield and reduce pressure on the land. An estimated 2 billion ton of CO2 emission worldwide would be saved by 2050!
Listen to Jana's podcast and find out many more areas where empowering women would help reduce climate change impacts.
